Registration Deadline: Friday March 2, 2012 noon at the BBSEF

LOCATION: Top of Pine Creek chair (#6), section right under this chair.
PRACTICE: Inspection and practice starts Saturday at 9:30 am to 10:15pm
START TIME: J1-J5, 10:15 am or J6-J7, 1:15 pm
How it works:
Each skier will have a judged run (J5 and older may have 2 runs). Skiers will be judged in 5 categories:
- Line difficulty. This is a predetermined value and all judges will agree on the value of the line skied by each skier.
- Control: The first category judged following the line value determination. It’s at the top of the list as it’s considered most important. A fall is the ultimate loss of control and will most likely have an impact on the remaining 3 categories to be judged. A fall with a skillful recovery (such as a forward roll, ending up on skis and not stopping) may reduce the penalty and will also have less impact on the remaining 3 categories.
- Fluidity: Constant direction toward the goal. Keeping your body moving down the fall line of the mountain. Keeping continuity and pace with smooth transitions for obstacles or jumps.
- Form and technique: Style, technical ability, etc. Taking air, doing tricks in the air, is accounted for in this category. Not only jumps or tricks are judged here though…proper skiing form and technique is huge here. All the stuff that coaches preach day in and day out…pole plants, hands staying forward, keeping the eyes and focus down the hill, proper angulation to help stay under control, etc.
- Aggressiveness (Attack): The energy one skis with. Is the skier attacking the hill (again with a purpose), or simply getting down the run? This is an area where it’s important to choose a line that the skier’s comfortable with so they’re able to ski more aggressively at their ability level.
Judging Each judge will independently judge categories 2-5 on a scale of 1-10. The line score will weight the scale score, depending on the line chosen. The judges will not be able to score more than 2 points above the line value that’s chosen. Example. If a skier skis a line with a predetermined value of 6, then the highest score that skier can get for categories 2-5 would be 8 points in each category. All four judges scores will be averaged for each round. The best score of the two runs will determine the skier’s final score
Some things to remember:
- We have a panel of 5 judges. All judges are experienced skiers. These judges are independent of BBSEF and they are not coaches or parents of any athletes.
- This is a competition about quality skiing. Although guts, air, tricks and style are factored in, we want to encourage the best skiing as explained in the 5 categories above.
- This isn’t just about taking the highest point line, or getting the biggest air, etc. While those are good if handled well, a fall or loss of control because someone’s skiing beyond their ability level, will most likely result in a much lower score.
- Skiers will have a time limit. We’ll establish an acceptable timeframe that all skiers should be able to finish within. Obviously some of the younger age groups will have longer allowable times than the older groups. If a skier falls, loses a ski, etc, but is still able to finish the run in the allotted time, they will receive a score.
- If a skier is not able to finish in the allotted amount of time, then they’ll be scored on the run up until the point where they ran out of time, but will be penalized for not finishing.
- This is about FUN! This is a way for skiers to challenge themselves in an arena they’re not used to.
- Bring your helmet…helmets are required!!!
We’ll need lots of volunteer help, setting up, hauling equipment to the area, cleaning up, cheering on all kids, and helping to keep wandering skiers out of the course during the competition.
